After beginning practice in early February, the Bridgeport Bombers baseball team took to the field for the first time Tuesday, May 20, hosting Chadron. The Bombers will have three teams this year: a senior legion team, a junior legion team, and a legion prep team.
Three returning players, including Nik Weibert, Josh Kler, and Tray Wright, will lead the way for the seniors. All three players boast pitching experience, with Weibert pitching a complete game in the team’s only postseason win a year ago. When Kler isn’t pitching, he’ll handle the bulk of the catching duties for the Bombers.Wright uses his speed to create havoc on the basepaths.Wiebert, who received all conference honors from the Panhandle Baseball Conference a year ago, led the junior team in several offensive categories while hitting a robust .531.
Pitching will be the strength of the junior team. Starters Kaden Shultz and Ruben Dominguez lead a pitching staff that looks to pound the strike zone and induce a lot of weak contact. Shultz led the team in innings pitched last year, and Dominguez was second in appearances. Noah Compton,Taylor Eichthaler, and Cody Bates highlight the arms out of the bullpen. Leading the way offensively will be Shultz, who hit .378 last year and was tied for the lead with runs batted in with Compton. Newcomers Jayden Harris-Miller, Jake Sparks, and Andrew Compton round out the lineup.
