District 47 legislative update

As the Nebraska Legislature approaches the final day of its 2025 session, Day 89, lawmakers are wrapping up a period marked by significant legislative activity and pivotal decisions. The mid-biennium budget adjustment process is only seven months away, and both the Governor and the Speaker have agreed that budget adjustment measures will be a priority next session.

Members of the Legislature commenced the week with an attempt to override the Governor’s veto of a measure, introduced by Senator McKinney, requiring the Omaha Housing Authority to address bed bug infestations. The vote fell short of the required thirty-three with 24 in favor, 24 opposed, and 1 present not voting.

In a significant win for small businesses, LB 415 passed on Final Reading with a vote of 3316 and will take effect on October 1, 2025.The bill includes provisions of LB 698 which in part would provide various exemptions that include temporary and seasonal agricultural employees, workers under the age of sixteen and businesses with ten or fewer employees.
