The future of 911 ambulance service discussed in Bridgeport

There was a good attendance at a joint county/city meeting at the Prairie Winds Community Center on Monday evening. The meeting discussed the possible transition of Emergency Medical services in Bridgeport, with a potential $300,000 budget allocated by the city and county to support the Morrill County Community Hospital continuing their Advanced Life Support service through July 1, 2026 while a sustainable plan is developed. The hospital’s current deficit is $600,000 for the year.

Mayor Beyer proposed that the city form a volunteer EMS service, facing challenges in recruitment. The city is exploring incentives for volunteers to join a service. The hospital is open to provide an ambulance, equipment, and some training. Historical data showed a $10,000 annual profit before the hospital took over the Basic Life Support service from the city. Former EMTs were encouraged to consider renewing their licenses.

City Administrator Coolidge said that all options are still on the table with regard to a paid or volunteer service and agreements with the county and the Bridgeport Rural Fire District.
