For the fourth consecutive year, the Bridgeport High School football team claimed the Class D-1, District 10 championship after storming back to knock off previously undefeated Hemingford 30-20 on Friday night in Bridgeport.
After Hemingford jumped out to a 20-0 advantage in the opening quarter, Bridgeport ignited to score 30 unanswered points to claim the victory. Both teams are now 6-1 on the season and will be in the playoffs in two weeks.
Hemingford, which hadn’t allowed a point in its last four games, clung to a 20-18 lead on the Bulldogs midway through the fourth quarter despite not scoring since the opening period. With Bridgeport facing a third-and-long situation with five minutes to play, quarterback Nik Weibert completed a pass to Gage Nein, who then lateraled to Kaden Shultz for a gain of 18 yards on a perfectly-executed hook-and-ladder play. The Bulldogs then went in front for the first time when Weibert connected with Cody Bates for a 19-yard touchdown to make it 24-20.
