After a fast-paced and hectic season, the Bridgeport One Acts team earned second place at the district competition along with a first place tech award with their production of “We Are the Sea,” by Laura Lundgren Smith. The competition was hosted here at BHS for the second year in a row, which was a welcome surprise for the team as it meant they got the full support of their peers in the audience.Their previous two competitions were just as much of a success, as they won first at Western Trails Conference (WTC) and second at South Platte Valley Association (SPVA).
The play itself is a very lyrical and dramatic one. It features a group of Irish women travelling by ship to America during the Potato Famine in 1845, but their journey is far from easy as they succumb to illness and endure cruelty at the hands of the Sailor. The story takes on a supernatural tone, as each woman dies, they meet the Sea and slowly become one with it.
The whole team competed swimmingly. Individual actors and actresses were also recognized for various awards. Junior Aaron Cooper, playing the villainous Sailor, earned Outstanding Actor at every single event. Many other members of the team also earned acting awards at each event. The Irish women, Norah, played by junior Claire Ekhart; Una, played by senior Fallon DeBlois; and Iseult, played by freshman Izzy Butler, were all incredibly well-played. Each girl won at least one acting award. Fallon DeBlois, unfortunately, graduates this year and will leave the team for good. Even still, they are sure to continue to excel, and next year are sure to be even better than this one.
