Elizabeth Menke made history by becoming Bridgeport High School’s first girls state wrestling champion last week in Omaha.
The sophomore capped off her historic season on the mat by beating Boone Central’s Leynn Luna in the Class B 115-pound championship match. Menke held a comfortable 19-6 lead in the third period before Luna was injured in the final minute and couldn’t continue.
“It’s an amazing feeling, just unexplainable,” said Menke, who finished her campaign with a 47-2 record. “I wrestled her (Luna) before so I knew it was going to be a tough match. I had to go out there with a positive mindset and just wrestle.”
