Winds gusting to 80 MPH on March 12, as the sheriff’s office and members of the Bridgeport Volunteer Fire Department responded to a semi tipped over at Angora Junction. En route, a call came to respond to a grass fire near the intersection of County Road 111 and 112 northeast of Bridgeport where the wind snapped a power pole and the electrical wires started the blaze.

As of late Tuesday evening, the Morrill Fire (primarily affecting Morrill Garden, Arthur, Keith and Grant counties) has burned approximately 572,084 acres, making it the largest wildfire in Nebraska history and among the top in U.S. history. It is active and currently 18% contained.

It is currently being overseen by the Rocky Mountain Complex Incident Management Team, which assumed command on the evening of March 14, 2026 (Saturday), taking over from initial local and state response efforts.
