A Quilt of Valor was presented to Gene Bateman on May 28 by Robyn Stefka and Mary Beth Mau (Panhandle Blocks Quilt of Valor Foundation), Shawn Weibert from the Morrill County Veterans Service Office, and assisted by Bayard American Legion Riders. The quilt was pieced, bound, and quilted by Family Friend Marla Marx.

Gene joined the United States Army in 1962 and attended basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. He was also stationed at Fort Geroge G. Meade in Maryland before being stationed in Germany from February 8, 1963, until August 7, 1964, where, as a PFC, he was a heavy vehicle driver. Gene was honorably discharged in 1964 at the rank of E4.

Gene received the National Defense Service Medal and the Overseas Service Medal.
