Stay protected from West Nile virus, health officials say

Fall sports are back across the Panhandle, which means more time on fields and diamonds at dusk—when mosquitoes are most active. Health officials say West Nile virus remains a concern until the first hard freeze.

“Recent mosquito surveillance has detectedWest Nile virus in the Panhandle, so it is more important than ever for residents to protect themselves,” said Megan Barhafer, Community Health Planner with Panhandle Public Health District.

Mosquitoes that can carry the virus are most active at dawn and dusk and are drawn to stadium lights and grassy areas.
