DALTON—It took most of the fall, but the Leyton Warriors finally got the one that had been missing.
On a busy Saturday in early October, Leyton swept Cody-Kilgore 2-0, winning 25-20 and 25-23, and put a victory in the books for the first time this season. After opening 0-17, the Warriors looked like a team that had been waiting for a match to break their way. Junior Kyndell Kesselring led the way with five kills. Freshman Skylar Draper was efficient on the swings she got, and sophomore Paige Frerichs supplied the team’s only block. Across the two sets Leyton finished with 15 kills, seven aces and 51 digs.
The rest of the week was a reminder of how steep the climb still is. Leyton opened the stretch with a 0-3 loss to Banner County on Oct. 1. Later on Saturday, the same day as the Cody-Kilgore win, Potter-Dix took a 2-0 decision. Hyannis was a closer fight: Leyton stole the middle set 25-20 before falling 2-1. On Tuesday night in Paxton, the Tigers never let the match get comfortable, sweeping Leyton 25-16, 255, 25-16.
