4-H workshop hosted in Bridgeport Saturday
On Saturday, a group of volunteers put on a 4-H workshop focused on several areas of family and consumer sciences. Throughout the day, the kids learned about basic kitchen safety, cleanliness in the kitchen, baking terminology, manners, table setting, simple machine sewing, cutting out a pattern and ironing.
They were also introduced to the fair book, which can help them with project selection and requirements. “We hoped to recruit new 4-H kids, educate younger youth by exposing them to the possibilities of 4-H and guide them,” said Toni Blomenkamp, one of the coordinating volunteers. “We also wanted to get some Jr. Leaders involved.”
The kids were split into two groups Saturday, which alternated between the kitchen side and the sewing side of the Home Ec. Room at the high school. With the help of volunteers and the Jr. Leaders, the kids each got to help bake a batch of brownies and make their own apron. Jr. Leaders who helped were Jenna Mitchell, Bailee Lake, Laura Albro and Leah Albro.
