It was 1998 when Judy Oltmann received a Christmas card from a local friend with a pencil drawn nativity on the front. The scene depicted rotund children as Mary and Joseph, Jesus, the Angel Gabriel and shepherds, along with three Wise Men.
That was the inspiration behind the creche that Judy commissioned Gary Wagner to build the following year for display on the Oltmann’s front porch. Wagoner built the manger and the shelter based on the card, and Judy created the tableau out of used telephone poles, broken fence posts and other scraps of wood. The wood was cut to size and pieced together for each character mentioned in the Gospels about the birth of Jesus, along with a star and several animals about two feet high and smaller.
