Public comments at townhall center on concerns about wind energy bill

Several constituents at Sen. Steve Erdman’s townhall Feb. 16 at the Prairie Winds Community Center raised concerns about a bill introduced by Sen. Tom Brewer of Gordon, which would provide setback and zoning requirements for wind energy generation projects.

LB 373 is one of the 739 bills introduced during the 90 day session, and Erdman said that he had read the statement of intent for the bill which requires counties that wish to host wind energy have zoning regulations in place that address three subjects: setbacks, noise and decommissioning. The values of those subjects are left up to the individual county governments.

By default the bill requires a three mile setback, meaning a turbine could not be constructed within three miles of a residence. However, the bill would allow the county to set a setback at a rate greater or less than three miles.
