The Storm in the Barn
Young thespians took to the stage last Tuesday night in Bridgeport for the annual One Act Dinner Theater presenting “The Storm in the Barn”, Eric Coble’s adaptation of Matt Phelan’s graphic novel by the same name.
Set in 1937 Kansas during the Dust Bowl, this is the hardship tale of Jack, a boy whose farming family struggles to survive the dust storms, a boy who also irks and disappoints his father greatly. The townsfolk are superstitious, and bullies harass him endlessly. The future it bleak, his sister Dorothy is sick with what the good ‘Ol Doc theorizes as something he calls ‘dust dementia’ and there is no rain in sight; Ma and Pa are desperate to rid themselves of the poverty, illness and death all around them.
