Waffles fundraiser

Waffles fundraiser

Alexis Liras, 5th grader at Bridgeport schools, is pictured here with the $310.00 she earned with her recent waffle project. Alexis said she got the idea when one of her friends asked her to make waffles for them to eat, and Alexis said, “it just grew from there” into an effort to raise money and awareness for the Bridgeport Food Pantry and people in need. She said her dad posted it on his Facebook page and suddenly, the waffle orders doubled, then tripled, and kept right on going. Alexis made the cinnamon waffles from scratch and sold them for $1.00 apiece in batches of two, complete with the topping. Her sister Eleni helped bag them up in zip tops for distribution. The Bridgeport Girl Scouts

The Bridgeport Girl Scouts

The Bridgeport Girl Scouts have been working this month on their gardening badge and took to the FFA Greenhouse on Thursday, March 25, to complete their work with Ms. Kortni Burnett, FFA Advisor at Bridgeport. The girls learned earlier in the month about the life of a seed, when and how to plant vegetables, and made a tiny greenhouse with guest gardener Susan Griffiths at the library. Their field trip last week allowed them to see a full-sized greenhouse, and they learned some of the science behind how things grow. Each girl was given a packet of flower seeds and a plastic container before they made their way to the buckets of dirt and planted their flower seeds. Pictured here in the front row, left to right are Emersyn Stull, Marina Cordes, Livia Kanack, Eleanor Schmidt, Janessa Lussetto, Laurel Pohl and Lily Weibert. Back row is Alexis Colton, Julia Basa, Elia Strawn, Eleni Liras, Braylon Schmidt, Alba Norman and Alexis Liras. COURTESY PHOTO

Hundreds of children headed out

Hundreds of children headed out to Easter Egg Hunts in the area this past Saturday to stake their claims in the hunt for the coveted first place egg. Bridgeport Volunteer Fire Department hosted their hunt at the East City Park, while Broadwater Volunteer Fire Department held theirs in Weborg’s pasture just west of Broadwater, and Dalton’s Auxiliary hosted theirs at the City Park in Dalton. In what proved to be a record warm weather day for an Easter weekend in these parts, children were able to be outside in shorts and T-shirts as they ran around with baskets finding eggs.
