Elected officials in Morrill County

Elected officials in Morrill County hosted their annual County Government Day for area seniors on Wednesday, February 23, at the Morrill County Courthouse. After a county board meeting and welcome, the students were introduced to the workings of the district court. Students then attended break-out sessions in small groups, led by county commissioners and other volunteers, and taken to the different offices in the courthouse, as well as the county jail and the emergency management incident command vehicle. They visited the offices of the clerk/election commissioner, county attorney, extension service, veterans service, assessor, and treasurer, as well as the roads department and the sheriff’s department. The afternoon was spent witnessing an actual sentencing in district court with students taking part in a mock trial following. While students from Bayard and Bridgeport high schools were present as usual, Potter-Dix also sent their seniors from Cheyenne and Kimball counties. Bridgeport Speechies

Bridgeport Speechies travelled to Ogallala on Saturday for their final meet of the regular season. Top placement for Bridgeport went to the Serious OID Team of Trinity Flores, Drew Leisy, Tegan Rice, and Eden Strawn; they placed 3rd overall. Because the Ogallala meet is so large, the top twelve contenders earn a medal, except in OID, which medals ten. Other winners from Bridgeport were Claire Linders and Rice for their 5th place spot in Duet Acting; Leisy, 5th in Humorous Prose; Lorien DeMasters and Cassandra Hopwood, 7th and 8th respectively in Persuasive, Rand Golden, 10th in Humorous Prose, and Hopwood, 12th in Extemporaneous. They are at SPVA in Grant today before taking a weekend off to prepare for the district competition in Ainsworth on Saturday, March 5th. Bridgeport has a good shot at sending more than one entry to State this year.
