A Memorial Service will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Bridgeport, NE, on March 20, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. Memorial donations may be made to CountryHouse of Grand Island in Gary’s memory.
Gary was born in McAlester, Oklahoma, on November 14, 1936, and was a twin to his brother Larry.
Beginning at age 13, he and his twin brother were raised by their father in Shawnee, Oklahoma, where they later graduated from high school.
He wore many different hats throughout his working career, but his favorite line of work—from which he retired—was serving as a shopping mall manager for The Hahn Company. This led him to live in Modesto, California; Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Grand Island, Nebraska; Kingsport,Tennessee; and Billings, Montana.
Gary moved to Grand Island in 1980 and managed Conestoga Mall from 1980 to 1983. It was there that he met Adalia Maurer, and they were married on September 3, 1982, blending their families.
They later moved to Kingsport, Tennessee, where he managed Fort Henry Mall, and then to Billings, Montana, where he managed Rimrock Mall. After retiring in May 1996, Gary and Adalia moved to Adalia’s hometown of Dalton, Nebraska, to be closer to family.
He made many close friends in Dalton and enjoyed meeting with them for coffee each morning. His favorite hobbies included taking exceptional care of his yard, flowers, and gardening. He also enjoyed golfing, fishing, camping, and many hunting trips with his sons and granddaughters. Gary was a devoted Oklahoma Sooners fan and made sure everyone knew it. His humor will be missed, as will his gift for turning strangers into friends.
Gary is survived by his wife, Adalia; his sons and daughter: Michael McGuire of Dalton, NE; Darren (ShLoe) Maurer of Sioux City, IA; Lea Anne (Sean) Hedges of Grand Island, NE; and Garrit McGuire of Boise, ID.
He is also survived by his granddaughters:Whitney (Cody) Butler of Superior, NE;Taylor (Jacob) Luesebrink of Sioux City, IA; Emily (Blake) Gunderson of Neola, IA; Madison (Blake) Roepker of St. Libory, NE; and Kennedy McGuire of Boise, ID.
(When Kennedy was born, 27 years after the four older granddaughters, Gary was incredibly excited.)
Gary is also survived by seven great-grandchildren, his brother Billy McGuire, Diane McGuire, nieces Tami, Kathleen, Kellie (Mike) Kirkpatrick, and nephews Shawn (Heather) McGuire, Gaylan, and Lonnie.
He was preceded in death by his twin brother Larry; his sisters Anita and Phyllis Jane; his nephewsTony and John; Elaine Campbell; and his parents,William (Bill) andTrudy McGuire. Gary will be remembered for his steady presence, his love of family, and the many friendships he built along the way; his family finds comfort in their faith, knowing he is at peace.
