James was the son of Andrew J. Fillis and Stella (Lojka) Fillis. He was one of seven siblings: Marjorie, John, Angelina,William, Dorothy, and Andrew.

James graduated from Bridgeport High School and went on to serve his country proudly in the United States Army. He married Betty Jo McCracken, and together they raised three sons: James Douglas, Daniel Lee, and Russell David.

A hardworking and dedicated provider, James farmed for many years and held a variety of roles throughout his life. He owned The R&W, managed the Co-Op fertilizer plant, operated The Oasis restaurant, and later drove truck for Marathon Oil. He approached every job with commitment, integrity, and a strong sense of responsibility.

Cremation has taken place with Bridgeport Memorial Chapel. Per James wishes, the family will have a private event at a later date.
