O’Neal, 81, passed away peacefully on August 2, 2026, surrounded by the love of his wife, daughters and granddaughters. His Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, August 6, 2026, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bayard with Fr. Tim Stoner as Celebrant.

Mike was born, January 18, 1945, to Don O’Neal and Theresa (Johnston).

Mike married the love of his life, Berna (Kildow) on January 19, 1963. They were blessed with three children, two daughters, Julie and Peggy, and a son Greg, who tragically passed away in a car accident at the age of 27.

Mike graduated from Bayard High School. After high school he moved to Chadron where he attended Chadron State College and received his bachelor’s degree in education. After his college graduation he taught high school English in Dalton and Minatare, before moving back to the family farm where he remained the rest of his life.

Mike took great pride in caring for his land; expanding the farm through land purchases, continually making improvements and growing his cattle herd.

His strong work ethic and dedication left a lasting impression on his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. The values he instilled in them will remain one of his greatest legacies.

Mike loved his family deeply and worked to pass on a strong foundation of faith. Through his words, “Sunday texts”, and more importantly his example, he taught countless lessons that will continue to guide those who knew and loved him.

He faithfully taught catechism for many many years, taking great pride in helping the youth deepen their understanding of Gods word and their faith.

Mike found great joy in watching his great-grandchildren and grandchildren pursue their passions, whether it was rodeo, sports, or academics, he cherished every opportunity to keep up with their lives and accomplishments. He was their biggest fan—always the first to call or text, wanting to know the game stats or hear every detail of a rodeo run.

Mike was a teacher at heart, whether he was sharing his knowledge of farming, strengthening someone’s faith, offering advice on the golf course or simply life itself, he found joy in helping others learn and grow.

Mike is survived by his wife of 63 years, Berna; daughters, Peggy (Darren) Ratzlaff and Julie (Chris) Miller; grandchildren and their families: Brooke Burford and Bob—Braxton and Brilee, Ashby Adams and Cory—Kyley, Greylynn Michael and Crew, Haden Scherbarth and Taylor, Tyler Smith and Amanda— Savannah, Raylynn and Dawson, Ethan Ratzlaff, Christopher Miller; sister- in-law Connie Kildow and many other special friends and extended family.

Mike was proceeded in death by his son, Greg, parents, in-laws, and his brother- in-law, Jim Kildow.

One of the things Mike often said was “Thy will not my will be done.” May those words continue to be said by those who loved him.
