Casey Benavides brings home gold medal from state tournament

Trevor Widener ends with fourth-place finish

Bridgeport’s Casey Benavides is the Class C 106-pound Nebraska State Champion following his perfect performance the State Wrestling Tournament in Omaha this past weekend.

Benavides advanced to the Class C 106-pound final with a 12-6 decision against Milford’s Konner Schluckebier. Schluckebier, who was 47-0 going into the semifinal match was ranked number one in the state on several polls. Benavides was ranked number one until he posted the only loss of his season at the SPVA/WTC Conference Tournament in Bridgeport.

After finishing third last year as a sophomore, Benavides was assured of a higher spot on the podium as a junior. He improved his season record to 40-1 with Friday’s semifinal victory.
