Three Bulldog grapplers bring home medals from state

Omaha’s CHI Health Center was host to the NSAA’s State Wrestling Championships this past weekend, with five local students vying for a spot on the champ’s podium. Bridgeport came away with three in the coveted top six spots, and placed 20th overall out of 53 teams in the Class C competition with 34 points. Leyton’s sole competitor, Trenton Rushman, competed in the 106# bracket, but did not place in the Class D contest; Trenton finished his year with an 18-12 record.

The Lady Bulldogs put the stomp on the Lady Mustangs last Tuesday in the final home game of the regular season. Bridgeport was down by one heading into the second period, but got their groove and never looked back, racking up a final score of 75-44. Ruthie Loomis-Goltl was dancing down the court, dropping in 20 for the team, followed closely by Mackenzie Liakos with 17, Sydney Nein with 15 and Olivia Loomis-Gold with 12. Sydney and Mackenzie each had four treys. Ruthie grabbed seven rebounds, and Olivia, six.

The Bulldogs fared well on Saturday, February 6, at Amherst for the NSAA Class C Sub Districts 4B, as seven from Bridgeport finished in the top four spots to qualify for the District competition this coming weekend. At 113#, Harrison Barnette placed second; At 120#, Chase McGrath placed third; At 126#, Chance Cooper placed first, as did Damien Bell in the 138# bracket. At 152#, Trevor Widener placed second, and Steven Menke, second at 16o*. Finally, at 17o*, Curtis Jackson placed fourth.

Four area students were selected for the 49th annual High Plains Honor Band and Choir held February 1-2, 2021, at Chadron State College. Usually open to more students, this year’s pandemic kept the selections to about 65 singers, and less for the bands.
