Sidney Martin “Marty” Smith, 62, of Lakewood, Colorado, passed away on Saturday, August 5, 2023. His graveside service was held August 12, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at the Redington Cemetery in Morrill County. It is respectfully requested that in lieu of any flowers, memorials in Marty’s honor be made in care of his family to be designated at a later time. Sidney Martin “Marty” Smith was born on May 28, 1961, in Lincoln, NE, to Robert G. and Virginia Smith. Marty spent his early childhood in Colorado Springs, CO, and moved back to Nebraska when he was in the 8th grade. He graduated from Bridgeport High School in 1979. He attended the University of Nebraska his freshman year and decided to move back home. He went to work for Morton Buildings in Scottsbluff in 1981.
He was united in marriage to Deborah Gorbutt on July 18, 1981. To this union, Jack Daniel (1982) and Adam Christoper (1984) were born. He and Deborah later divorced.
Marty found his true calling in 1985 when he became a member of the Colorado State Patrol. Marty served with great pride for nearly 30 years.
He always wanted to “catch the bad guys.” He was very proud of his service with the patrol and in his final years, he worked with the Hazardous Materials Transport Safety and Response team. Trooper Smith was always a professional. There wasn’t anything that he couldn’t handle.
Marty retired from the State Patrol on August 31, 2015. It was also on that day that he married Dorothy Cotner-Emerson. Dorothy and Marty enjoyed traveling all over the United States. Everywhere they went, Marty wanted to visit the zoo. There are hundreds of pictures of the two of them touring zoos.
He was an avid Rockies fan. He and Dorothy attended many home games.
Marty was an excellent cook. He loved to experiment with new recipes.There wasn’t anything he wouldn’t sample.
Marty is survived by his wife Dorothy; his sons Adam (Jennifer) Smith and Jack Smith; grandchildren Kolby Smith and Katy Smith; stepson Blayne Backer; parents Robert G. and Virginia Smith of Bridgeport, NE; sister Barb (Leo) Hoehn, brothers Clint (Jeri) Smith and Mike (Lisa) Smith; father-in-law Jerry (Jan) Cotner; brother-in-law Michael (Katy) Cotner; sister-inlaw Becky Summers; aunt June Troudt; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Marty was preceded in death by his grandparents, Clinton and Amanda Smith, and Joseph and Florence Burry; brother-in-law Brad Cross, and great-grandmother Bessie Smith.
