As we enter into the last few days of the 106th Legislature, almost nothing can be said for progress. The Legislature has killed property tax relief, the consumption tax, and even student discipline in our schools. The only hope remaining is LB 814, a bill to outlaw dismemberment abortions. So, today I would like to speak to the reasons why this bill is good for Nebraska.
The beginnings of the pandemic-delayed Nebraska Legislature were a microcosm of all that has transpired since the coronavirus reared its head in March.
Nebraska voters passed Initiative 427 to expand eligibility for Medicaid services from the State. The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has been working hard to implement the expanded coverage, which will be called Heritage Health Adult. Thanks to the team’s focus and effective management, enrollment will open as planned on August 1st and services will begin on October 1st.
The Nebraska Legislative Chamber, just like practically everything else in our lives, looked different when senators gathered Monday to finish the final 17 days of the long strange 2020 session.
It’s time to reopen Nebraska’s schools. Children need to learn, so it is time for them to go back to school next month. Gov. Ricketts agrees. On Friday he said we can reopen the schools and manage the coronavirus at the same time, and I agree.
