Honor Band takes center stage in Bridgeport
On Monday, January 11, Bridgeport was host to the 14th Annual Oregon Trail Honor Band, sponsored by Doane University. This year’s band was limited to 72 instrumentalists from thirteen schools due to Covid-19 restrictions. Usually conducted by Doane’s own Dr. Jay Gilbert, this year the band was conducted by three area guest directors.
Over 100 students auditioned for a spot on the stage, with site reading an important factor to determining who was chosen to participate. The musicians arrived in the morning and began rehearsal at 10:00 a.m., putting in a full days’ practice before their 4:30 p.m. public concert of four musical works. The pieces included Johannes Hanssen’s March, Valdres, conducted by Kristi Hiles Smith of Kimball schools, and Salvation is Created written by Pavel Chesnokov, conducted by Shawn Oakes of Leyton Public Schools. The concert finished with the Lalo Shifrin theme song from Mission: Impossible and Adrian Sims’ Energy, both conducted by Joseph Rischling of Chadron.
