They say it’s outside the box thinking, but the box is 27-years-old
Senator Steve Erdman of Bayard says his new tax reform proposal (LR300CA) represents “Thinking outside the box on steroids.”
Sorry Senator, we opened that box in 1993 and the Legislature’s Revenue Committee held a public hearing and quickly closed the box. It was LB195, the Transaction Tax. It looked a lot like your consumption levy act to replace sales, income and property taxes with a single tax levied during every business transaction. The committee voted 6-0 to kill the bill.
The Transaction Tax was brought to Lincoln by longtime McCook businessman Don Klein who represented Nebraskans for Equal Taxation. He convinced Sens. Cap Dierks of Ewing, Owen Elmer of Indianola and Rex Haberman of Imperial to carry the bill. Sens. Tim Hall of Omaha and Jim Jones of Eddyville also signed on.
